How To Fade Fabric

I had a totally different blog post
lined up for today but I got so excited
over my success
that I had to share it with all of you!
In my last post you read how upset
I was over a recent online purchase
that wasn't what I was expecting.
Unfortunately, I couldn't return the bed-skirt
because it was a final purchase item.
Soooo, after reading all of your lovely comments
I decided to go ahead
and try to fade the bed-skirt fabric.
 Here it is before...
Slightly garish and not at all what I ordered.
I read up online on how to safely fade fabrics.
Martha even chimed in with her advice.
Hey, if you can't trust Martha
then who can you trust...
Although, I do recall a birthday cake
that I ended up in tears over...
but that is a different story!
I used Clorox Ultimate Care bleach,
Oxi Clean White Revive,
and a small amount of regular Clorox bleach.
I washed it three or four times
in the washing machine
and then set it out to dry in the sun to dry.
Because what fades things better than the sun, right?
I tried not to be too conspicuous
because there was a  pro-am golf tournament
happening on our golf course this weekend.
I'm sure my laundry hanging in the backyard
would only add to the credibility
of the tournament!
But, I do have to tell you
that the sweet little kids next door
sell lemonade every year
to raise money for Brain Tumor Research.
So adorable!
So did it work?
Heck yeah!
Scroll up to see the difference!
So much softer and the colors are so much calmer.
I am so thankful for my readers
and their wonderful ideas!
I seriously LOVE you guys
and I read every comment that you make.
If I don't respond
it is only because I can't track you down.
Look at how well it now blends with my drapes.
It's a little bit of perfection!
Right there in my Master Bedroom!
I am just going to take a moment
and stare at how lovely it is!
And I give all the credit
to my wonderful readers!

Thanks again!

Until Next Time,
Beaux R'eves,

Amazing! Thanks for that great tip for fading too bright fabrics. I saw your post over at Metamorphosis Monday blog party...your bed skirt certainly did have a metamorphosis.

Cindy,
WOW...So much better. I would not have thought of that! I would have been so afraid that one spot or another would have gotten more bleach and I would have ended up with one area of just white! :) Great transformation!

It really did work and it looks beautiful ~ your entire bedroom is gorgeous ~ I don't blame you for wanting to stare at it! This is such a good trick to know. It is so hard to see the true color of things online.

This is just gorgeous. You are so brave with a bleach bottle, but you manage to get my favorite color.

I admire your spunk and courage for giving it your best shot~! it looks GREAT.

so please take this tiny suggestion as me trying to be helpful:) I have a psp pro graphics program so I took the photo with the drapes and bedskirt to my program.. when I got the tone value from the drapes it had a Vanilla //off white undertone-- you wouldnt see that when you look at it unless it was up against a bright white// blue or green undertone... anywhooooo lol.. here's my suggestion- take about a teaspoon to a full washer of water, you'll thhink theres none in there even if you scoop some in your hand- BUT- dont add anymore.. swish the water to make sure the rit dye is full incorporated into the water- then put the bedskirt in and wash as normal-- then an extra rince. wish you had a small piece of the bedskirt fabric to use as a test piece.. it shouldnt effect the blue/green check at all but it will tone back the//what still looks bright white on my monitor ,, enough to make it a perfect match to your drapes and shams. now, if this messes it up- you never saw my comment and I'll move to a foreign country so you cant wring my neck..
I deleted the photo I used to check the color value..

PS in case my monitor is reading it wrong--cause, of course you can see it way better than I can= just ignore my above comment....

This turned out so good! And, thanks for a seriously great idea on how to fade fabric. I have a few things that I am going to try this on.

I can't believe how perfectly your drapes and shams match the new bed skirt.now. I would have been so afraid to go ahead and bleach. So happy you took the "big" step to go ahead. I love so much how it turned out. Just beautiful! Congratulations...

Love the idea of "aging" by lightening the fabric. Yours turned out quite lovely.

What a great solution!! I remember "tea dying" a set of linen and lace pillow cases to "dirty them down". But I've never tried fading things like this. Thanks for the tips.

Looks great! I need to fade red fabric for a sewing project. What amounts of the clorox and oxi products did you use during your washings? TIA!
