Relaxing on the Screened In Porch

With all that has been happening
around our house this is the perfect spot
for me to relax and unwind.
Our little Summer dog is getting
much better every day!
We are trying hard to get some weight
back on her and she is still a little fragile.
The weather sure has been nice lately.
Everything is green and lush
and the trees are all leafing out.
I haven't planted my flowers
in my pots yet,
but I did buy a few plants
for the screen porch.
My pansy's had a great season
and I hate to pull them out.
But by next week they will have heat stroke.
They did well in my front planter boxes, also.
The cool and rainy weeks
that we had were perfect for them.
I loved driving up to the house
and seeing the beautiful colors.
We are past the freeze stage (I hope)
so it's OK to leave the ferns outside at night.
I put one in my rustic basket for now.
They need to be re-potted
so they have room to grow.
 I love coming out here
and having coffee in the morning.
It's not a large screen porch,
it's about 12 feet by 14 feet, at best.
But it's large enough for sleepy puppies
to take an afternoon nap...
There are lots of comfy, cozy
pillows on the outdoor sofa.
This old grain sack is done up
pillow case style.
I just tucked in the ends.
We have had a lot of showings
these last few weeks.
One day I had back to back to back
showings for four hours straight...
The dogs and I had to take refuge
in my son's backyard.
The feedback is always the same...
LOVE the house!
The house is AMAZING!
BEAUTIFUL Kitchen!
On and on ...  But....
There is always a but, right?
The reason they all give
is directly behind this chair.
When we first moved here there was nothing
but land surrounding us on all sides.
We are on the golf course facing two lovely ponds.
You could look out and see green
and trees everywhere.
But,  (there is that but again)
little by little they started building.
They told us when we bought the house
that they were zoned to build light commercial.
You know, a bank, some office buildings.
But it has taken quite a different turn.
They built apartments
and we weren't happy about that...
They built a shopping center with a Von Maur
and a few other stores and that was OK.
Then they started building closer
and they put in a Stein Mart
and they are working on this monstrosity
called a Sheel's sporting goods store.
The Stein Mart is what everyone objects to.
Mr. Beaux went to every homeowners
meeting and city council meetings
to try and stop the building
but the developers won every time.
Our house would have sold twenty times over
if not for the Stein Mart sign.
The thing is...
that once you are inside
the house it is quiet and peaceful.
I don't really notice commercial stuff.
We are now working with the homeowners
association and the golf course to plant trees
to cover the offensive sign.
It is very frustrating though.
It's like going out on lots of dates
but never getting a second one.
Your life is in a limbo of sorts.
But, looking on the bright side...
as I like to do...
We don't have anywhere to go...
we don't HAVE to move...
So, I'll just stay here in my beautiful house
until the right buyer comes along.

Until Next Time,
Beaux R'eves,

That is an unfortunate situation. I'm surprised that the Planning Board did not take into consideration that there is a high end housing development and golf course near by. Big box stores usually bring a community down. There must be a sign ordinance in place. Our town has a strict code on signs, no back lighting and no facing the homes. I'd consult with a lawyer, you might just have a case to sue the town because they (the town) have caused a hardship for you in not being able to sell your home. It's another case of 'buyer beware', always investigate the zoning requirements. Hope you have a happy ending to this.......hugs....

That is one spectacular porch! Just beautiful. I've never heard of a Stein Mart, nor have I seen their sign. Thanks for sharing your porch with us. It was a nice visit. :-)

Your porch is beautiful....I would want to spend all my time out there :o) We have had some unfortunate things happen to bring the value of our home down too. You just never know what the future holds even if you think you have been diligent before buying your home. I used to wonder why on earth people would want to live in the middle of nowhere with nothing but acres and acres of forest around them....I know why now!!!! I if ever win the lottery that is exactly where I am buying a home! LOL

After reading your posts and seeing your gorgeous home, I kind of wondered why it wasn't selling. We had a lesser, but somewhat similar, situation with our previous home. Eventually a buyer who loved the house and didn't care about the lumber yard way behind the house came along. It had been a small town hardware store that became a lumber yard over time. Not quite a home depot, but almost. Drove my husband crazy. Your home is beyond beautiful. It will sell!!

I'm sorry this has happened. We built our home on 5 acres, with lots of farmland and wooded areas around. Now it's 13 years later, and as some of the farmers have passed away, their children have sold to developers. It's not commercial, but subdivisions. Now they've added a school to accommodate the population growth, and the traffic on our formerly quiet and peaceful road has increased ten-fold. I hope your situation will be helped with some screening and landscaping, but your home is beautiful and if you're meant to move on, the right buyer will love it just as it is. I would certainly love a porch like yours! Good luck!

Oh gee, I wish you luck with the sale and planting of trees to help your home. So hard to be in limbo. Your home is beautiful. Sheila

So sorry you are having trouble selling. Hate when things get built after being told they wouldn't. Walmart got built at the end or our street a few years ago and the traffic on our road is awful. I think we will have a hard time selling if we ever do.

What a beautiful space you have created. I am sorry to hear you are having trouble selling. It is impossible sometimes to stop all the growth happening around our homes.Enjoy your gorgeous porch! xxx Maria

Maybe you could pull the blinds down half way when you know it will be shown so potential buyers can absorb the room before the view. Even some potted large plants on the deck to screen the view might help. It appears you can walk to the shopping so I would suggest the realtor play up the convenience. Gorgeous porch and since its my first visit I'm off to check out the rest of your home. Best Wishes and good luck with a sale!

I stopped by to check out what you've been up to. After reading this I immediately thought of how people in the city with a balcony or private patio area often put up a green wall to masque the view a bit and increase privacy. My mind went right to your adding large planters with smaller trees or shrubs that would help disguise the view a bit. You don't have to make it a solid wall but several planters in the right spots could help a lot. I hope things are going well.

Cindy, that is such a shame that the beautiful view was replaced with stores and signs. I hope the trees get planted. That sounds like a good solution. Like you, we enjoy our screened in porch. Some years ago, we enclosed it with French doors and window fitted with Phantom Screens. Now we can use the room year round, but yet make it a screened in porch anytime we desire. We don't have your golf course view, but we back to a greenbelt with lots of trees. Ww feel fortunate.

Oh Cindy I hope that you have found a buyer since your last post. We just went thru the selling of our home and it is so nerve racking to say the least. This has been one of the most stressful things the Mr and I have been thru in our 20 years together but in the end we know it was best to sell and move on. We are patiently waiting on our new house to be completed and feeling displaced is one of the worse feelings.

Your house will eventually sale i'm sure

Cindy, I'm sorry for your frustration. It's a shame that the developers aren't held accountable. They should have planned with trees to screen the development from the neighborhood. I hope someone can see the value in the beauty within. Love your screen porch.
