So, you thought that I left you hanging
on the Estate Sale Furniture that I wanted to
purchase didn't you?
purchase didn't you?
Well, with the week that I had
I just didn't get time to fill you in...
So sorry about that!
We had lots of trips to the vet...
Little One got his snip snip
and the Old Gal is just getting old
with a droopy eye and other problems,
one day with a painter working on
our ceiling leak stain that was too high
for us to tackle,
a plumbing day working on our shower
and the kitchen sink,
and on one sunny day
a house full of window washers!
I barely had time for anything!
Let's catch up!
This is the furniture that I saw
on EstateSales.net last week.
I went on Thursday, the opening day, to check it out.
It was in really good condition
but there were a couple of roadblocks...
One, they wanted to sell the furniture as a set,
the bed frame, dresser, mirror and highboy.
I wasn't really interested in the bed.
And two, they wanted $800.00 for it.
I didn't want to pay that much
but I thought that if I let it sit until half off day
that it might be gone altogether.
So, what did I do?
C'mon, you know me!
I didn't pay the asking price!
I talked to the person in charge of the sale
and told her that I was interested
and wanted to put a bid on the furniture.
I placed the bid at $550.00.
Typically, you have to bid at least more than half
of what the original price was,
so I thought that was a fair bid
and what I was willing to pay.
Well, wouldn't you know that they called me
that afternoon and said that they had decided
to accept my bid!
Well, how about that!
And on the first day too!
I ran back over Friday morning
and paid for the furniture.
The sale was at this cute little yellow house
in an older area of Shawnee.
Isn't it just the cutest!
There are my drawers out on the lawn!
Here's the dresser loaded up on
Clifford the Big Red Truck.
We actually found an old tax return
stuck to the top of one of the drawers from 1968.
The owner made $7800.00 that year!
After doing some research I found out
that it was made in 1948
and was called the Randolph Lee Group by Drexel.
Here is an ad that was in several newspapers.
You could buy all three pieces for $298.00.
The design was a takeoff on the
Hepplewhite and Chippendale style.
I love the detailing on the dresser and highboy.
It adds just enough without being too much.
It's in pretty good shape
with just a little bit of wear on the top.
Nothing that I can't live with...
I am debating how much, if at all,
I should clean up the hardware...
We moved it into the guest room
from the garage
this weekend.
Can you see my little ottoman?
It found a home under the guest room window...
I like the contrast between the wall color
and the mahogany furniture.
Any tips on cleaning up around the edge
of the drawers and the top where
it looks like permanent fingerprints?
The Highboy fits perfectly in the corner by the door.
I am still working on accessorizing,
but I have to keep it simple...
But, I will tell you that I am over the moon
with my purchase!
It was exactly what I was looking for!
Still not sure what I am going to do
with the bed frame...
I will keep you updated as I am making other
changes in the guest room too.
But, isn't that the way it always goes...
Until Next Time,

BEAUTIFUL pieces Cindy!!
ReplyDeleteThese are very well made pieces, they will last forever!!! I use Murphy''s Oil Soap, it comes in a jar, follow the directions, I even use it to wash my kitchen cupboards, have used it for years and years......
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I love Murphys also, can get it at the grocery store. I apply with a warm damp rag, to apply and remove dirt as I go. Then I wiped down with a clean soft cloth. I follow with some orange oil to give older pieces like this a little moisture. If it has scratches you would like to remove Restore A Finish works well, can usually find at Lowe's.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Cindy

Try Goop, found at Walmart in the automotive hand cleaner section. It is great for removing grime, fingerprints, accumulated film, off of fine antiques, without damaging the wood. It won't raise the grain. Smear it on, wait a few minutes, then wipe off with a soft cloth.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I love love love Drexel! I have a 4 pc full size suite. I also have a 4 poster twin bed suite that was my mothers as a child, then mine, and is now being used by my daughter. The absolute best cleaning/shining product to use on it is Howard Restor-a-Shine Burnishing Cream, followed by Old English Oil. I only use the burnishing cream every couple years, and the Old English every couple months to keep the wood from drying out. I found the burnishing cream at my local mom and pop hardware store.
