I scored the BARGAIN of the century with my
beautiful silk drapes that I found at an Estate Sale. I couldn't believe how well they matched my Hearth Room furniture and waited patiently to hang them when
we got back from our short trip to Colorado.
Even more exciting was that I also found the hardware
(well most of it) at the same Estate Sale for only $8.00.
I gave Mr. Beaux instructions on precisely
how I wanted them hung.
He did a great job except:
I came up a little short!
Now you are correct, I should know better.
I should have measured first and anticipated this disaster. But, hey, I'm human.
I DID measure the drapes
when I brought them home.
I just forgot to measure the space they were going into.
I got busy and started doing other things and just assumed (always gets me into trouble) they would be long enough. Well, now what to do?
Make some choices that's what!
What to put at the bottom of the curtains
to make them longer...
1. JoAnne's Fabric, kind of burlappy and nubby. I really liked this but it wasn't on sale like I thought it was so I put it back.
2. Calico Corners, a larger check/plaid in the same color way as the edging. Nah, a little too bright for me.
3. From my fabric stash. Someday I will actually use this fabric but not for these curtains.
4. Calico Corners, I thought that a stripe might blend in but it got too busy.
5. Fabric stash again. OMG, I think this might be PERFECT!!! It's got the same colors, it's silk, I like that it's darker and will ground the curtains. This fabric is from Beacon Hill. I designed the most gorgeous drapes for a client with this fabric.
I measured the width of the curtains and cut the fabric. I folded it in half and ironed it on the fold.
I cut it in half on the fold.
I ironed a small hem in the fabric and sewed it.
Straight line sewing is about all I can do!
I pinned the fabric on the curtains, right sides together.
Here is the top of the rod that Mr. Beaux hung up for me.
I bought the rod and 4 finials for $8.00 and bought the rings and the brackets at Lowe's. I know that they don't match EXACTLY but when it's up there you really can't tell.
Cost for my All Silk Curtains:
Cost for my All Silk Curtains:

Dry Cleaning: $13.00 each
Rod: $8:00
4 Brackets
and
14 Rings: $20.00

Not too shabby!

No, not too shabby at all. They look wonderful.
ReplyDeleteGreat solution, Cindy! They are beautiful!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great deal. Nice job fixing their "short-comings".
ReplyDeleteBeautiful!!!!
ReplyDeleteWay to go!! I seriously can't believe that you found those gorgeous drapes at an Estate sale and your solution to add length was perfect. They look beautiful!!
ReplyDeleteVanessa
Not shabby at all!!! I love them and how you "fixed" them:) XO, Pinky
ReplyDeleteGood job, Sis! Glad you didn't have to add the cost of my plane ticket to your bottom line :)
ReplyDeletePerfect solution! Sally
ReplyDeleteLovely drapes and a great deal! You did a wonderful job adding the fabric! Very elegant!
ReplyDeleteXO,
Jane
Looks like they were made that way! Fantastic job!!
ReplyDeleteA beautiful save! What a deal you got on the panels!
ReplyDeleteCindy they look beautiful!!
ReplyDeleteThey look like custom drapes now. Actually, they are custom-made...it just wasn't intentional. They are very pretty indeed!
ReplyDeleteThey look beautiful!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous solution!
ReplyDeleteWow! You know what? I think it actually looks better having that little band of coordinating fabric at the bottom like that. You did a great job making it blend so seamlessly. I love how they look! What a great score!
ReplyDeleteI must be old fashioned, or dorky. I prefer my drapes an inch or two off the floor. They don't catch pet hair and the vacuum doesn't catch them. I was going to try to talk you through letting down the hem, but your solution is so much better. Maybe I will re-thing drapery lengths.
ReplyDeleteYou scored big time. Love them. I really like the colors.
ReplyDeleteCynthia
Your drapes are truly stunning! I would never guess in a million years that they were ever too short. The fabric you used to make them longer couldn't be any more perfect!!!! Just beautiful......

Not a bit shabby, just gorgeous and you did an awesome job of making them fit. Beautiful fabrics.
ReplyDeleteBabs
Brilliant and beautiful! I can't believe you lucked into those gorgeous drapes.
ReplyDeleteWhat a brilliant fix! I love your fabrics!!! So rich. I actually have a pair of curtains that are too short! Thanks for the great advice and for joining TUTORIALS TIPS AND TIDBITS... what a great post!
ReplyDeleteHigh five, you nailed it! SO pretty.
ReplyDeleteI have a friend who puts a bendy wire in the bottoms
of curtains and bedskirts and then she molds them to stay put,
isn't that funny? Always looks incredible too.
LOVE these Cindy! They are seriously GORGEOUS! And I had the SAME thing happen to me a couple of weeks ago and did just what you did and it worked out beautifully!
ReplyDeleteThese curtains are stunning!

What a great project! They look like they were made that way!! ~Deanna
ReplyDeleteThose drapes are beautiful, Cindy! I think I would have bought them even if I knew they would be too short. Your solution was a great one. I love the way it looks. Great save and great project!

I'm really enjoying the theme/design of your site. Do you ever run into any web browser compatibility problems? A couple of my blog readers have complained about my site not working correctly in Explorer but looks great in Chrome. Do you have any recommendations to help fix this issue?
